Applications of complex valued neural networks to optical signal processing using phase sensitive detection schemes are proposed and discussed In optical information processing systems the advantages of complex valued neural networks are realized directly utilizing physical phenomena of lightwave and phase sensitive optical detection In the proposed system the summation and nonlinear transform of the complex signals are processed in parallel and quickly by using optical circuit Phase sensitive detection scheme is used for extracting the complex valued signals The complex valued neural networks implemented as optical neural systems make a starting point of coherent optical neural networks The author is also with the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology RCAST University of Tokyo Komaba Meguro ku Tokyo Japan e mail ahirose tansei cc u tokyo ac jp
